Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, survivors of Indian Residential Schools began to publicly share their experiences of abuse at Indian Residential Schools. In 1991, Grand Chief Phil Fontaine spoke candidly about the abuse he received while a student at the schools, and called for a public inquiry.
